    EUREKA OUTDOOR CAMP is a non-profit charitable society offering overnight outdoor recreational programs for children and adolescents with invisible disabilities. These can include learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, Tourette Syndrome, mild autism etc. The disabilities may be congenital or as a result of injury. Our summer program offers campers a chance to try new skills and make friends in a friendly environment where our staff participants have a good understanding of invisible disabilities and related disorders and the challenges they create.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Reporting to the Camp Director, the Health Director is responsible for the coordination of and response to the daily health care needs of the camp community. The successful candidate will be certified OFA-3 or hold Advanced Wilderness First Aid or be a registered nurse and, have a demonstrated understanding of the needs of children with invisible disabilities/neurological deficits.

    The following elements are characteristic of our program and staff should be able to develop and maintain the following

    • Maintain a highly structured environment, especially with regard to the distribution and security of medication and emergency procedures.
    • Provide consistent leadership, supervision and direction with simple rules with regard to appropriate behaviour.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Health Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Executing emergency procedures as required and act as first responder in emergency situations
    • Ensuring the secure storage of all prescription and non prescription medication
    • Dispensing medication to campers and administering first aid to campers and staff.
    • Collecting and administering health care information
    • Keeping records of treatment and medication for both campers and staff
    • Maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment having regard to safety requirements and budgetary considerations
    • In partnership with the Camp Director, maintain contact with campers' parents regarding serious medical issues as defined by the Camp Director.
    • Working to maintain health and safety standards in all aspects of camp programming
    • Providing health and wellness education to the camp community (e.g. sun safety, hand washing, etc.)
    • Be available on-site for all staff training.
    • Pre-camp, the Health Care Coordinator will work with the Camp Director to implement health care procedures and coordinate First Aid.
    • Post-camp, the Health Care Coordinator will complete an end of summer review with recommendations for the next camping season.


    Having regard for the above, staff will:

    • Review reports and other documents relating to a campers general health and well-being as well as specific information related to the campers disabilities.
    • Execute emergency procedures as required and act as first responder in emergency situations

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    • Certified OFA-3 or hold Advanced Wilderness First Aid or Registered Nurse (or equivalent).
    • Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience as a Health Director in a camp setting

    • Post-secondary education in special needs, youth programs, recreation or related fields.
    • Previous experience working with children, particularly children with invisible disabilities.
    • Previous residential or summer camp experience.
    • Sound planning, organizational, supervisory and communication skills.
    • Willingness to participate in cabin group activities and supervision after program hours.

    Other qualifications may include:

    • Strong background in outdoor or wilderness pursuits.
    • Class 4 driver's license.
