    Fall Waterfront Instructor

    Job Title: Waterfront Instructor

    Job Duration: August 31st, 2017 to October 31st, 2017

    Job Hours: Full-time & Part-time Positions Available

    Reports To: Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Director

    Job Purpose

    The Waterfront Instructor provides the expertise, experience and skills required for the safety of campers participating in all waterfront activities. The Waterfront Instructor will lifeguard swimmers and boaters on the water at all times. The Waterfront Instructor will also help with the facilitation of waterfront activities, in set-up, take down and instruction where needed. The Waterfront Instructor is an integral member of the program staff team and when there is no activity on the waterfront, the Waterfront Instructor will be reassigned to assist in another program area. During the spring and fall season the Waterfront Instructor will often lifeguard independently and must be competent in guarding alone, making safety judgment calls and acting as the emergency scene leader if needed.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Staff Training

    • Participate in 100% of pre-season staff training
    • To read, know and practice the information covered in the "Policies & Procedures" section of manual. (Failure to comply with this information could result in discipline including dismissal.)
    • To read, know and understand the Waterfront Policies of Sasamat Outdoor Centre
    • To submit a criminal record check forms and necessary certifications along with employee agreement to the Outdoor Education Director no later than April 1st, 2016

    Risk Management

    • Demonstrate knowledge of risk management protocols in keeping with camping industry best practices and provincial regulations
    • Provide constant vigilance when on patrol
    • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront emergency equipment to ensure all is in place and good order
    • Conduct a daily inspection of waterfront area to ensure it is free of hazards

    SOC Lifeguard

    • Ensure Sasamat Outdoor Centre waterfront policies are being followed Camper Group Leadership
    • Provide behaviour management and general camper care assistance whenever possible
    • To provide group facilitation when needed, assisting program staff
    • Role model appropriate behaviour

    Other Duties

    • The Lifeguard may be asked to assist in duties not listed above. Sasamat Outdoor Centre expects the support of all staff members in fulfilling objectives that may not be specific to this position

    Qualifications

    Specialized Knowledge and Certification

    • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
    • Current NLS (National Lifeguarding Service Pool) + (National Lifeguarding Service Waterpark)
    • Small Boat Operators’ certification
    • Current RCA BC Advanced Solo/Tandem Canoe certification

    Additional qualifications considered an asset

    • Current WSI (Water Safety Instructor)
    • LSI (Life Saving Instructor) certification
    • NLS (Waterfront)
    • Valid Class 4 driver’s license

    Skills

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to work independently within prescribed parameters, exercise initiative, and communicate effectively with supervisor
    • Strong organizational ability
    • Ability to work with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups
    • Ability to supervise peers of a close age
    • Ability to observe and assess camper behavior, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
    • Ability to participate actively in a team
    • Enthusiasm, sense of humour, patience, self-control

    Experience

    • Prior experience in a pool or camp waterfront setting
    • Prior canoeing or kayaking experience

    Working Conditions

    • Requires working in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions
    • May require working with difficult clients
    • May require some weekend work

    Physical Requirements

    • Physical ability to provide rescue to swimmers and boaters in emergency situations
