    Position Title: Director, Sea to Sky Region (Camp Elphinstone)

    Location: Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada

    Terms: Permanent, Full-Time

    Salary: $90,000-$100,000 annually

    Situation:

    YMCA Camp Elphinstone is located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, a 40-minute ferry ride from Vancouver. It is situated on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound. During July and August, Camp Elphinstone offers programs for youth ages 5-17, including one and two week overnight camps, Leadership Development programs, paddling and hiking multi-day out-trips, and day camps. From September to June, Camp Elphinstone operates as an Outdoor Education, Event and Retreat Centre for schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Camp Elphinstone currently serves over 10,000 participants annually.

    YMCA Camp Elphinstone has accommodation and dining for up to 472 campers or guests. Camp Elphinstone employs approximately 140 staff/volunteers during July and August, with a team between 20-50 for the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons, and a smaller core team of 10 staff during the winter season. Successful Camp Elphinstone staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting.

    Nature & Scope:

    The Director, Sea to Sky’s primary responsibility will be overseeing the general management of YMCA Camp Elphinstone by providing year-round leadership support for all camp operations, standards, programs and services including summer camp, outdoor education, adult conferences/retreats and private events.

    In addition to running the operations for Camp Elphinstone, the Director will be responsible for overseeing the Gibsons Graphic’s Lab and building relationships with local schools and partners by attending and supporting community events.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Oversee and provide strategic leadership in development and delivery of all camp operations, standards, programs and services including summer camp, outdoor education, adult conferences and retreats, and private events.
    • Responsible for managing interpersonal conflicts and behaviours among participants. This includes making decisions to remove a child from camp due to code of conduct violations and liaising with the parents/guardians to communicate such decisions effectively.
    • Responsible for working with HR and recruitment partners to manage behavioural and performance-related matters concerning up to 135 staff. This includes oversight of recruitment, implementation of performance improvement plans, and terminations.
    • Comfortable and available to be on call 24/7 to solve a wide range of problems and crises that may arise, such as waterfront emergencies, land program emergencies, off-site backcountry emergencies.
    • Ensuring health and safety for up to 540 people on site at a time, including maintenance and monitoring of all standards of practice, risk management and due diligence in keeping with accepted standards.
    • Responsible for incorporating equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and truth and reconciliation, across all aspects of Camp by building relationships with Indigenous partners, and supporting inclusion planning.
    • Directly supervising and providing leadership and guidance to 3 full-time team members: Summer Camp Director, Outdoor Education Director, and Food Services Supervisor.
    • Maintaining and building positive relationships with clients, including families, school boards, and alumni engagement
    • Supporting donor, alumni and funder relationship building, and active participation in fundraising activities.
    • Developing and managing a financially viable budget (approx. $4 million dollars annually)

    Qualifications/Experience:

    • 5 + years of leadership experience.
    • 3+ years of experience in a management role at an Overnight camp or Outdoor Education Centre similar in scope and scale.
    • University Degree in a related field
    • Ability to multi-task and remain results focused in a high demand environment.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule according to operational needs.
    • Strong public relations, marketing and communication skills.
    • Ability to adapt and work through ambiguity, changing priorities and juggle multiple demands with competing timelines.
    • Demonstrated ability to make sound judgments and decisions and create action plans based on information discovered.
    • Excellent organizational skills with great attention to detail.
    • Possess or capacity to obtain Standard first Aid & CPR C, Occupations First Aid Level 3, PCOC boat operator’s license, Association of Challenge Course technology Level 2 certificate, unrestricted Class 4 License.
    • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding start date
    • 3 Professional Reference Checks to be completed
