BACKGROUND:
Camp Potlatch, owned and operated by Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC, is a wilderness based residential summer camp located in BC’s Howe Sound area for children between the ages of 7 and 16. Camp Potlatch has been in operation for over 70 years with the philosophy of providing quality summer experiences to all children, including those from low-income families. Successful camp staff candidates will require a criminal record check and must provide references. All camp staff live and work on site, which is located 45 minutes away from downtown Vancouver.
OVERVIEW:
With the support of a Cabin Leader, the successful candidate will spend four camp sessions planning, implementing, and leading 6 day outdoor programs to cabin groups of 10 children in a wilderness residential environment. The other four sessions of the summer will include paid work as a Kitchen Assistant who also acts as a resource staff member to all other staff at Camp Potlatch.
Working with a Cabin Leader, Volunteer Cabin Leaders are directly responsible for the 24-hour care and supervision of 10 campers per week between the ages of 7-14. Cabin Leaders will lead their cabin group through a variety of core activities over the course of the week including an overnight out-trip.
The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting the Head Cook with all aspects of Camp Potlatch’s food service. This includes but is not limited to: food preparation, cooking, cleanup/dishes, serving from the kitchen. Other duties may be assigned by the Head Cook and Camp Coordinator.
Remuneration for this position includes transportation to and from Camp Potlatch, meals, accommodation, and a competitive industry salary for the term. All split positions pay a daily rate for up to 28 days spread out throughout the summer.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kitchen Assistant:
Kitchen Assistants are required to commit to a full summer contract at Camp Potlatch, splitting his or her responsibilities between being a Volunteer Cabin Leader and a paid member of the kitchen team (roughly 4 weeks in each role).
- Help the Head Cook ensure all dietary restrictions and food allergies are accommodated
- Unloading and storage of food deliveries
- Help in the general duties that may arise as part of a non-counseling staff for that time period (help with meal time skits, theme days and camp wide games)
Volunteer Cabin Leader:
- Lead Camp Potlatch outdoor programs with the support of a Main Camp Cabin Leader
- Be a creative, flexible, supportive and approachable leader
- Work as an active and positive member of the Camp Potlatch staff team
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years old by July 9, 2018
- Previous experience working with children
- Foodsafe Level 1
- Standard First Aid with CPR “C”
- Bronze Cross
- Clean Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
