    JOB OVERVIEW

    The Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes provides children and youth affected by cancer and their families with an unforgettable overnight summer camp experience in a medically supervised, safe and supportive environment. We have been committed to providing a camping experience for children affected by cancer since 1985.  

    The Canadian Cancer Society believes that time spent at camp allows kids to just be kids, away from their diagnosis. Camp Goodtimes is proud to provide programming that gives joy, confidence, support, and hope for children with cancer and their families.

    The Leaders-In-Training Facilitator will live on-site at Camp Goodtimes hosted by UBC’s Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, near Maple Ridge, BC. This position will work with the Youth and Young Adult Program Specialist, summer staff team and volunteer team. He/She/They will facilitate leadership programs to 16-18 year old youth during Kids Camp programs, This means supporting program, as participants develop communication skills, trust- and respect-building skills, time management skills and general leadership skills. The role also entails supervising participants when during down time and ensuring the physical and emotional safety of campers on site.

    This position is also member of the program leader team at camp. During Family Camp programs this role will act as a Land Program Leader. The program leader team is responsible for instructing camp activities and supporting other staff and volunteers in delivering programs. They will also have other daily responsibilities such as helping with supervision of campers, evening cabin support, facilitating early morning and evening programs, program logistics, and care/maintenance of camp program equipment.

    COMMITMENT:

    • ·         May 11, June 8, 9, 25, 26 – In person training in Vancouver or at camp at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC
    • ·         June 30 – August 4, 2024 – on-site living at camp for 6 sessions at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.
    • ·         August 9 – 23, 2024 – on-site living at camp for 3 sessions at Camp Pringle, Shawnigan Lake, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.

    WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

    • ·         Facilitate Leaders In Training and the Exploration Program under the direction of the Youth and Young Adult Specialist.
    • ·         Ensure programing that is engaging and consistent with the goals and objectives of Camp Goodtimes
    • ·         Role model positive behaviour to campers and workforce
    • ·         Ensure the physical and emotional safety of campers
    • ·         Facilitate all camp and creative programming when required
    • ·         Actively contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • ·         Previous experience in camping, youth recreation and or/ experiential education
    • ·         Experience working with populations with a range of accessibility needs
    • ·         Excellent interpersonal skills, including team-building, and facilitation skills
    • ·         Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work as a team member.
    • ·         Experience or understanding of cancer diagnosis and it’s physiological, social, and emotional impact or a willingness to learn.
    • ·         Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
    • ·         Criminal Record Search including vulnerable sector check (once hired)
    • ·         Must provide proof of up-to-date childhood immunizations
