Guest Experience Host - Housekeeping & Hospitality

    Employment Dates: Start date - May 10, 2023; End Date - September 3, 2023


    Wage: $16.00 per hour, plus accommodation, all meals when Food Service is offered, water taxi fares (2 return trips per month), & staff shirt


    Summary of Position: The Guest Experience Host is responsible for all aspects of our guests’ successful and enjoyable experience on site, and includes tasks related to housekeeping, hospitality (customer service) and programming. 


    This position is a full-time, 40 hour per week position during the spring and summer months (May through to Labour Day weekend in September). As such, the successful candidate is required to live on site during this time period. A schedule for each month will be provided to the successful candidate by the 15th day of the month previous (i.e., the work schedule for July will be provided by June 15th).


    Overview of Camp Fircom: We would like to acknowledge that Camp Fircom is located on Cha7elkwnech (Gambier Island), in the ancestral and unceded territory of Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish First Nation). A short 20 minute water taxi ride from Horseshoe Bay, Camp Fircom is situated on a 120-acre waterfront property with access to ample recreational opportunities, including swimming beaches and hiking trails. 


    The mission of Camp Fircom is to create communities of belonging and experiences to grow on. The heart of our non-profit organization is the operation of summer camp programs, which we are optimistic about running this year. We also operate a year-round retreat centre, hosting weddings, family vacations, conferences, work and wellness retreats, adult programs, and other groups. 


    Living Arrangements: From May – September, accommodation is provided in a shared unheated cabin without plumbing, electricity, or internet. Shared washroom facilities are available exclusively for staff use, and access to the internet is available in most communal buildings throughout camp. Meals are included when guests are on site and Food Service is offered. 


    Duties and Responsibilities: 


    Training:

    • Actively participating in 100% of all comprehensive staff training sessions, prior to the beginning of the operating season and throughout the season

    • Actively participating in training sessions for recreational and sports activities, including: archery, canoeing, kayaking, farming, arts and crafts, tie-dying, sports, hiking, and nature-based education


    Housekeeping (approximately 70% of hours worked):

    • In collaboration with members of the Guest Experience team, cleaning and sanitizing shared spaces according to the daily cleaning and sanitizing schedule

    • On departure days, with assistance from site staff and in collaboration with the Guest Experience staff team, cleaning and sanitizing shared spaces and guest accommodations, which may include 




    laundering linens and making beds with fresh linens (Farmhouse, Cottage and Craigcroft accommodations)

    • Laundering linens, towels, rags, etc. on an as needed basis

    • Organizing the Laundry Room and Janitorial Closet on a regular basis, ensuring that all supplies are kept tidy and in their assigned places

    • Ensuring appropriate cleaning supplies are used for the surfaces being cleaned

    • Assisting with extra cleaning and sanitizing tasks as required


    Hospitality & Programming (approximately 30% of hours worked):

    • Leading recreational and sports activities for all guests (children, youth and adults) 

    • Ensuring guests are following activity-specific safety protocols

    • Ensuring all recreational and programming equipment and supplies are sanitized after use and put away properly, and that any damaged equipment is removed from use and reported to the Program & Waterfront Director so that it can be replaced 

    • Engaging and communicating with guests and staff in a friendly, respectful manner

    • Responding to guests’ needs and inquiries in a timely manner

    • Preparing accommodations and shared spaces for guest arrival

    • Welcoming guests to site, which includes off-loading guests from the water taxi, assisting with luggage, delivering the Fircom Community Speech, and escorting guests to their accommodations

    • Assisting with the serving of meals during meal times, which includes bussing tables and cleaning and sanitizing surfaces after meal service

    • Assisting guests on departure days (i.e., collecting luggage and bringing to dock, facilitating the loading of guests on the water taxis, etc.)

    • Assisting with the coordination of special events and weddings (i.e., ceremony and reception), including set-up and clean-up of indoor and outdoor spaces used for the special event/wedding


    General:

    • Being sensitive to, and striving toward, fulfilling the mission and values of Camp Fircom

    • Carrying out other duties as required 


    Safety:

    • Developing a working knowledge of Camp Fircom’s Guest Experience Staff Manual and Policy and Procedure Manual  

    • Learning Camp Fircom’s Emergency Procedures and being prepared for emergencies 

    • Taking ownership for the safety of guests, volunteers  and fellow staff, and actively managing risk

    • Monitoring guest, volunteer, staff and site safety, and reporting any concerns to the Executive Director


    Reporting and Evaluations:

    • The Guest Experience Host reports to the Guest Experience Coordinator, who will lead a goal setting and evaluation process for the Guest Experience Host in collaboration with the Guest Experience Director

    Qualifications:

    • Experience leading recreational activities with children, youth and families

    • Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search upon hire (requirement by age)

    • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team

    • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends


    • Strong communication skills

    • Experience in public speaking and demonstrated ability to capture the attention of large groups

    • Exceptional time management skills

    • Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail

    • Ability to stand or walk for 8-hour shifts, and bend, lift, and carry 30 pounds

    • Willingness to comply with all Camp Fircom policies, procedures and protocols

    • First Aid & CPR certification

     Assets:

    • Bronze Cross, OFA III

    • Provincial certification in canoe or kayak

    • Experience with cleaning and sanitizing kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and common areas in a commercial setting (i.e., hotels, resorts, camps, etc.)

    • Demonstrated experience leading farm-based education programs, particularly on a small scale vegetable farm

    • Fluency in a second language
